Jakarta was mix of different sides. Everything from more modern and sleek places to a lot of ghetto and chaos. Mostly the latter one. A lot of street food and general businesses operating on a street level. I was lucky enough to meet some nice locals during my stay as well.

I LOVE MCHN DRM http://www.danielbrokstad.com/portfolio/i-love-mchn-drm/ http://www.danielbrokstad.com/portfolio/i-love-mchn-drm/#comments Sun, 28 Sep 2014 21:59:55 +0000 http://www.danielbrokstad.com/?p=4654 I <3 MCHN DRM (I Love Machine Drum) is a Norwegian indie house / electronic duo from Sandnes, Norway. The band consists of Trygve Stakkeland on synth and Geir Strandenæs Larsen on drums. I designed their band identity, consisting of logo, posters, pins and a demo album cover. The identity itself takes roots in their music which has a certain retro vibe and portrays their music in a non-figurative way; man and machine, hard geometry meeting the soft and dynamic as the duo themselves has a high focus on playing their music live and not only hitting the play button.

Sinner’s Passing http://www.danielbrokstad.com/portfolio/sinners-passing/ http://www.danielbrokstad.com/portfolio/sinners-passing/#comments Tue, 09 Sep 2014 17:51:15 +0000 http://www.danielbrokstad.com/?p=4628 “Sinner’s Passing” is a personal illustration project. People easily pass judgement of others, even when not knowing how the person is fully like. They still stick to their first conclusion and might fully miss out on the person based on this. A passing might refer to both a pass of judgement as well as someone’s death. People keep their judgement until they pass away themselves, and maybe only at the last moment they’ll realise what kind of mistake they have done, which judgement they have passed too easily and how they might have sinned as a consequence of this.

PSYCHEDELIC REALITY http://www.danielbrokstad.com/portfolio/psychedelic-reality/ http://www.danielbrokstad.com/portfolio/psychedelic-reality/#comments Wed, 14 May 2014 07:56:38 +0000 http://www.danielbrokstad.com/?p=4590 “PSYCHEDELIC REALITY” is a illustrative design series focusing on the reality escapes almost everyone has in one way or another. It’s about reaching your personal climax, forgetting about everyday chores and difficulties and simply on that feeling which makes you just feel wonderful and worth living for. Our views slowly become clouded from reality, we reach another state of mind. Wether this is reacher through thrill & excitement, drugs, sex or any other way – we all go there.

Notum http://www.danielbrokstad.com/portfolio/notum/ http://www.danielbrokstad.com/portfolio/notum/#comments Mon, 14 Apr 2014 07:51:07 +0000 http://www.danielbrokstad.com/?p=4588 Notum is latin for ”known”, and is a tour operator as well as a consultancy company within the travel business in Norway. They focus on having a local insight and knowledge to all the small paths and unique sights in the vast nature in Norway – they want to deliver an extraordinary view worthy of a “postcard moment”. The identity builds on this, taking inspiration from a postcard stamp as logo together with photographs of Norwegian nature. The logo mark itself is a tree branching out to smaller paths and destinations.

Kuala Lumpur http://www.danielbrokstad.com/2014/02/kuala-lumpur/ http://www.danielbrokstad.com/2014/02/kuala-lumpur/#comments Thu, 13 Feb 2014 13:05:20 +0000 http://www.danielbrokstad.com/?p=4475 It was a short stay of only 3 days in Kuala Lumpur, but still it was an interesting little trip there. First of all it was the first time I went to a Muslim country, except the airport in other middle eastern countries. Malaysia and Kuala Lumpur had a very mixed vibe. It was a mix between the middle east and south east Asia, with a heavy presence of Indians and Chinese people. Shockingly, only 50% of Malaysia are actually Malay, and this just shows how mixed the country is. Highly conservative in daytime, yet surprisingly open nightlife. Its a city of two worlds.

Phuket http://www.danielbrokstad.com/2014/02/phuket/ http://www.danielbrokstad.com/2014/02/phuket/#comments Tue, 11 Feb 2014 17:09:39 +0000 http://www.danielbrokstad.com/?p=4343 As described earlier, I called it “Hell in Paradise”. Originally when booking my trip to Phuket I had not prepared myself for what this would be. Without proper research I assumed it would be “The southern city in Thailand, close to a beach”, as Kaohsuing in Taiwan or Busan in South Korea. However, this is a completely different beast, on a touristy level beyond everything I have ever seen before. I have been lucky enough to be reserved from charter locations, but I guess not anymore after this. As I heard more and more “horror stories” from Phuket, I rebooked my stay, changing it from 6 days to only 3 days – and yes this was more than enough.

Phuket is still a very nice place, if you only look at the nature. There is a reason why it has become such a tourist machine. Just too bad this industry is eating up the place itself and killing what would otherwise be a wonderful place. Drunk tourists, “cheap” shops and hookers. Welcome to Phuket.

Bangkok http://www.danielbrokstad.com/2014/01/bangkok-2/ http://www.danielbrokstad.com/2014/01/bangkok-2/#comments Wed, 15 Jan 2014 02:26:47 +0000 http://www.danielbrokstad.com/?p=4282 After Vietnam, Thailand was next and starting with Bangkok. This was my 2nd time here. I honestly didn’t enjoy Bangkok too much my first time here, but I had decided to give it another shot, this time with a bigger budget than my broke student budget from last time. Also, this time I had been lucky enough to get more insider tips of where to go and which places to check out – and this undoubtly led to me liking Bangkok a lot more this time around. I especially enjoyed Thonglor and Ekkamai area, a very hip and trendy area with a lot of locals hanging out.

Ho Chi Minh City http://www.danielbrokstad.com/2014/01/ho-chi-minh-city/ http://www.danielbrokstad.com/2014/01/ho-chi-minh-city/#comments Sun, 05 Jan 2014 06:02:00 +0000 http://www.danielbrokstad.com/?p=4220 The first destination of my Hello World travel was Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. I have previously only been to Bangkok in Southeast Asia, so it was interesting to see both the similarities and differences. One thing is for sure, the traffic in Vietnam is absolutely crazy. Even at green light crossing the road you’ll have to dodge motorbikes coming your way, the stream of motorbikes just never ends – pretty much everyone has one. I found Vietnamese people to very kind and welcoming. And it was for sure a big contrast between rich and poor in Ho Chi Minh.
