Choose your dose

Who doesn’t love coffee? I can at least testify that I freaking love it and it’s a huge part of my everyday life and creative process. But which dose is the right for you? And what is the outcome of the different dosages of coffee? I have created a series of posters, cards and coffee cups called “Choose your dose” to guide you to the right level on coffee intake. Find your dosage below.

Weekend trip to Lillesand

This weekend I was on a weekend trip together with the people from M&L going to Tone’s cabin in Lillesand – in the very south of Norway. She is kind enough to host everyone at her summerhouse/cabin. We were lucky with the weather and had a great time having a BBQ, playing in the sun and a good amount of drinks.

Heart Attack

As most of you people know, on the 22nd of July 2011 there was two attacks that happened in Norway, a bombing of the government block in Oslo and then a shooting that took place at an island called Utøya about 1 hours drive outside of Oslo. Both of these hideous crimes was performed by the same guy who’s a social outcast and right wing as his “revenge” on society. The guy was thankfully caught.

Not long after this happened, Positive Posters released their brief on this years poster competition and based on the brief this was the first event that came to mind for me, so I decided to make a poster about the recent events, mainly focusing on Utøya but still keep it as a motivational poster as in reminding of the tragedy but still showing how well people kept together and opened themselves to others afterwards.

Resturante X

Restrurante X is a high end, young and edgy restaurant focusing on delivering an amazing dining experience in Stavanger, Norway – or for those who just want to sit down for some exclusive drinks. I created the identity, as well as it’s own custom monolined typeface called “Resturante X Regular”, used in the logo and overall the identity. The identity uses both a emblem/seal logo and a regular logo and together with the strong yellow colour it creates a strong contrast.

Barcelona – Class contrasts

During my short stay in Barcelona and already within the first day it was quite clear to me that Barcelona was a city of contrast, in more than just one aspect of the word. It’s quite the tourist place, and it has nice buildings and locations, but you don’t need to even walk into any dodgy back alley to see all the huslters walking around to trick some stupid tourists or snatch their wallet. But when the night actually comes around and you do happen to walk in the alleyways, it’s almost absurd how frequently you’ll be bombared with offers of everything from the illegal scene. From all the drugs you can imagine to completely ongoing hookers that are pretty much begging you for sex(and money).

OFFF 2011 in Barcelona

OFFF is a anual design festival in Europe, changing locations and this year returning to Barcelona, Spain. I went down there for my first time at OFFF, but also first time in Spain – together with the designers from M&L. Although I don’t have a lot of photos from the conferences themselves from the event since I was busy paying attention to what was being said and shown, I still feel very inspired by everything I saw. New impulses, new people and new creatives to follow for future work. Being at the event and seeing what others did, I started itching to do some creative work myself.

Springtime

I went down to Kristiansand last Saturday and had a shoot there I was hired in to do for 2 models; Amalie and Rikke. Spring is here in Norway and summer is around the corner, so we decided to go for a spring/summer looks for the photos with an added twist of vintage fashion. The shoot took place at Odderøya, just south of the “downtown” of Kristiansand, on a rather cold and windy day – but the spring feel still shines through in the photos.

Mix tapes typography

With the use of mix tapes I wanted to create a typographic series drawn with only one continuous line, per side of the tape. Mainly sticking to writing one word in one seamless line. This was an interesting challenge typographic wise and made the project quite fun to work with. Each of the posters and typography has it’s own style of music. Here is the results, inspired by the days of the cassettes and homemade mix tapes.

Current status

I have been quite busy since I returned to Norway and haven’t really updated with anything that has been happening here, so thought I would at least put up a few words on what’s going on. First of all I’m currently working as a freelance designer at the moment, but got a desk and a mac at Melvær & Lien, which is where you’ll find me everyday at the moment. So I work on both projects on freelance basis for them, but also other projects from different sources.

Most exciting project in the making is a CD cover I’m designing for a metal band from Oslo. It has come quite far and starting to look finished, just some final work on the typography, text and distributer logos and it’s all set. I also did the photographs for this project which ended up awesome and I can’t wait to show the final product.

Apart from that I’m also working on 2 different identities and website designs. One is a identities and website for “Young & Pregnant”, helping teenagers with guidance to pregnancy. The other one is for a big private party, which will have it’s own logo, invitation and website to create a professional look to the big event.

Long story short, I have a lot exciting coming on the horizon that I’m looking forward to show, so stay tuned.

Hot ‘n’ Nerdy

This is a shoot done right before the turn to 2011, which I had almost forgotten about so being put up on the website with quite a delay! Dusting off the Super Nintendo, popping the cartridge in and time for some sexy gaming.

Bangkok

On my way back to Norway, moving back there from Australia, I decided to drop by Bangkok in Thailand on my way back, and took a few days off there to explore and see the place. I was lucky enough to meet locals who showed me around what Bangkok had to offer. I honestly got a bit mixed reactions of Bangkok and it has without any doubt been the most ghetto place I have ever been to so far. Very strong contrasts between the very rich and the very poor.

Returning to my mother country.

So the time has finally come, even if I didn’t want it to come this early. I have now been living for almost 2 years in Melbourne, Australia and I have had a blast! Best 2 years of my life. And if it was up to me to just decide if I could stay or not, I would stay without any doubt. But things aren’t exactly that easy. Because of the difficulty for me to get any further visa, and visa limiting me in how I can work in Australia, I’m pretty much being forced to leave Australia in mid march now, as it is expiring.

I will be returning back to Norway and start applying for jobs there instead. It will be strange to return for sure, and I wonder how I will adapt after everything I’ve done and experienced here. Will Norway really be able to please me anymore? Only time will tell.

Snopp & Fisse

Snopp & Fisse are two different tees based on Swedish and Danish slang for… well, the private areas of boys and girls. I wanted to use awkward and funny slang words from scandinavia in a typographic setting for some tee designs. These t-shirts are released alongside my new online apparel store, so they are up for grabs!

The T-shirts, along others can be bought here: http://danielbrokstad.spreadshirt.com/

St Kilda 80s

Aiming to capture the classic retro looks of 80s roller blading girls lightly dressed wearing colourful clothing, skating down Santa Monica beach in L.A. I might not be in L.A., or even the US for that matter, but we went down to St Kilda beach a hot day and got to work. The shoot took place at St Kilda beach itself, and also in the little park area beside Luna Park. Having the theme park in the background and all the palms really managed to resemble the look we were going for.

Night Out: Gertrude & Rear View

Me and my friends very often go to different exhibitions and opening nights around Melbourne’s massive art and design scene, and after being at a very pleasing one earlier this week, it just hit me; “I never bring my camera along”. The main reason for this is obviously that we’re having drinks and carrying equipment for $5000 around is not exactly comforting. But despite that, I decided to give it a go. And in the course of the night, we were also so lucky to be hit by a freak rainfall of 170mm rainfall in 3 hours.

Another dieline feature.

Packaging design and especially beverages design have grown to become one of my favorite fields of interest within design, which is why I like to stay up to date and look for inspiration from other great work on the net. That’s why thedieline is one of my favorite design blogs I keep up to date with on the work being featured, and I’m happy to announce my 2nd feature there. The featured piece is the Mother’s Ruin premium london dry gin.

Hipster-series

The “Hipster” series is a collection of different hipster girls promoting different old school, vintage and different cameras, in a total collection of 3 different cameras and girls. This shoot is also meant to capture the hipster look and feel, which is all the popular at the moment and maybe in particular in Melbourne, Australia, as one of the major “hipster cities”.
